Exploring Local Tamu Markets

Tamu is a lively occasion that is fancy by the locals where it can be defined as part of the heritage of Sabah, an old practice back in the days when Sabah was known as North Borneo under the British colonial era. Back then the locals would come from far away villages to bring their produce to exchange them with others in an open markets. Today these tamu are held once or twice a week to give a chance to the local communities to sell their farming harvest and live stocks. Tamu are held by districts and towns, and in Sabah among the well-known tamu are Kundasang, Tamparuli, Kota Belud and Penampang, which attracts the locals to come and flock for unique produce from each town as each of them held their Tamu Market in their own fascinating way. So make sure to seize this opportunity to explore the beauty of each “Tamu” simplicity at Sabah.

There are several big native market ‘Tamu’ held throughout the week, among the big market that flocks the local and visitors alike are the Kota Belud Sunday Market, Tamparuli Wednesday Market and Tuaran Sunday Market. Smaller towns would hold their own market too, which starts on every Saturday as early as the daybreak. There are many varieties and a good mix of traditional and modern items are displayed for sale. From fresh seafood and vegetables to clothing found along the sidewalk of the street. Also a good potential to can find variety of fresh vegetables from the highland countryside together with lowlands greens, jungle ferns and local vegetables from the swamps. Some would just go to the tamu to catch up with friends exchanging news and stories with one another.
