Deramakot Wildlife Safari

Deramakot Forest Reserve

Sabah’s Hidden Gem of Borneo Rainforest Conservation

Tucked deep within the heart of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, Deramakot Forest Reserve is a 55,507-hectare stretch of lowland and hill dipterocarp rainforest known for its pioneering role in sustainable forest management and incredible biodiversity. Located approximately 190 kilometers from Sandakan, it takes about 4 to 5 hours by 4WD to reach this remote wilderness, making it one of the most exclusive wildlife destinations in Borneo.

What makes Deramakot truly special is that it’s the longest continuously managed tropical forest in the world under Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, showcasing how conservation and responsible logging can coexist.

Unlike the more frequented parks, Deramakot offers low visitor traffic and high chances of spotting rare wildlife, including:
  • The elusive clouded leopard
  • Bornean orangutans
  • Borneo Elephants
  • Sun bears, leopard cats, and a host of nocturnal mammals
  • Over 250 species of birds

With no fancy resorts or crowds, Deramakot is best suited for true nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and eco-conscious travelers seeking raw, off-the-grid experiences. Night safaris along forest trails and logging roads reveal some of Borneo’s most incredible nocturnal wildlife activity.
