Meet at your hotel lobby and proceed to the open market or “Tamu” as the locals phrase it. Drive to Donggongon town (depending on which day, “tamu” location might be different at times) and squeeze in the crowded folks selling and buying stuffs. Tamu has a long history back in the colonial era when the British allowed the locals to exchange produce in the open market throughout North Borneo. In the olden days folks are selling mostly local produce – vegetables, fishes, herbs, fruits, rice, livestocks, antiques and silverware to name a few. Tamu also became the social gathering platform. Important announcements and celebrations were held here, where it also functions as the the method to distributing news to the far interior. Its like a melting pot of culture at one place. People from far and nearby exchanges story.
Nowadays, tamu still hold that important role to spin the economy of the local folks with the additions of many new and modern stuff being sold like cakes, CDs, clothings, electronic gadgets and many more.
Your guide will help you to spot some rare items being sold, try some local delicacies or even helps you to bargain for souvenir if you interested in. On the way back, proceed with a brief Kota Kinabalu city tour. Stop at the local restaurant for lunch before heading back to your hotel.
