Situated beneath the Oyayubi Peak’s looming shadow, the Gurkha Hut stands as the tallest man-made structure on Mount Kinabalu and across the expansive island of Borneo. Crafted with resilient oak wood and crowned by a metal zinc roof, this humble abode features a simple wooden platform serving as a bed. Placing your sleeping bag upon it, you’ll find a snug retreat to unwind after a demanding hike. Despite its elevated perch, the hut exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere, providing an ideal spot to rejuvenate while soaking in the breathtaking natural splendor that envelops it.
The picturesque summit climb of Low’s Peak has made Mount Kinabalu a well-known destination for adventurers. The Western Plateau of Kinabalu is the location of an expedition package that includes an overnight stay at the Gurkha Hut, which is perfect for those with a more adventurous spirit. The hut is situated on the western ridge of Kinabalu and is nestled among the jagged peaks, just beyond the magnificent Oyayubi Peak, which stands at an impressive 4,000 meters.
The Gurkha Hut is made of oak wood and has a metal zinc roof, making it the highest man-made hut found on Mount Kinabalu, as well as the entire island of Borneo. Unfortunately, due to its small size, the hut can only accommodate a maximum of four people at a time. As a result, this particular expedition is limited to three individuals.
Meet and pick up from Kota Kinabalu City hotel, journey up the hilly Crocker Range en route to Kinabalu Park. Upon arrival our team will assist to register for your hike, where then you will be given an ID Tag (do not lose the tag), a pack lunch and introduced to your mountain guide. Your climb will start off from Timpohon Gate, here you will get a safety briefing from your mountain guide. The hike on the first day is for 6km, which takes about 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness to reach Laban Rata Rest house. Along the trail there are seven shelters and with toilets for the convenience of climbers. Tap water are available on every shelter as well, the locals (mountain guides and porters) would drink straight from the tap, however we recommend you to use water purification tablets if you choose to refill your water bottle.
Mount Kinabalu is home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals, do take a break for lunch and to enjoy the fascinating montane forest with pitcher plants, and wild orchids growing wild along the trail.
Upon arrival at mountain hut, check into your designated bed and settle in. At the restaurant you will have access to filtered drinking water to refill your water bottle. Dinner is served between 4.30 – 6.30 pm and it is an early lights out at 8pm.

An early morning wake up for supper at 2.30 am, meet up with your mountain guide to continue your summit climb for sunrise. Be sure to have your ID tag and headlamp with you during this portion of the climb to the summit, as there is a check point to inspect your ID tag. Witness an exhilarating sunrise from the highest point in Borneo, with a chance of picturesque view of the different peaks of Kinabalu. Making onward journey to the Western Plateau while hiking through the rocky route, enjoy the beautiful scenery as the clouds started to rise to the peaks.
Approximately an hour of hiking, the sight of Oyayubi Peak along with the Gurkha Hut where the accommodation for the night. Settled in and enjoy the stunning view of the mountain and if weather permits the view of sunset over the South China Sea. Evening prepare for dinner, to enjoy with a nice cup of hot drink while stargazing the beautiful night sky (if weather permits).

Watch as the sunrise, pack up after breakfast and start hiking back to Panalaban. Short rest at Laban Rata resthouse before making a descend back to Timpohon. Estimated to arrive Timpohon Gate by 5 pm and transfer to the lodge at Kundasang for a good night rest.
