Nestled in the heart of Sabah, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC) stands as a beacon of hope for orphaned orangutans. With a primary mission to provide care and rehabilitation for these young primates, SORC plays a vital role in their journey back to the wild. Many of these orangutans have been orphaned due to illegal logging or captured as illegal pets, and SORC works tirelessly to teach them essential skills like climbing and foraging before releasing them into their natural habitat once more.
Not far from SORC lies another remarkable conservation center: the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Sharing the same noble objective, this center focuses on rehabilitating Bornean sun bears, known for their playful and active nature. Unlike other bear species, sun bears do not hibernate and can be seen climbing trees and extracting honey from beehives, earning them the endearing nickname of “honey bear.”
Visiting these centers offers a unique opportunity to witness the incredible work being done to protect and rehabilitate these endangered species. At SORC, observe the young orangutans as they undergo specialized training and regain their natural instincts, preparing them for a future in the wild. Meanwhile, at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, marvel at the antics of these charismatic honey bears, whose playful nature will captivate your heart.
Both centers provide valuable educational experiences, allowing visitors to learn about the challenges faced by these remarkable creatures and the ongoing conservation efforts to protect them. By supporting these initiatives, visitors contribute to the preservation of these magnificent species and their fragile habitats.
