Situated beneath the Oyayubi Peak’s looming shadow, the Gurkha Hut stands as the tallest man-made structure on Mount Kinabalu and across the expansive island of Borneo. Crafted with resilient oak wood and crowned by a metal zinc roof, this humble abode features a simple wooden platform serving as a bed. Placing your sleeping bag upon it, you’ll find a snug retreat to unwind after a demanding hike. Despite its elevated perch, the hut exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere, providing an ideal spot to rejuvenate while soaking in the breathtaking natural splendor that envelops it.
Embark on an exhilarating adventure as you explore the three infamous peaks of Mount Kinabalu on this expedition. This is not for the faint of heart as it is only suitable for extremely fit climbers with prior mountain climbing experience. Along the trail, you will encounter sections that require the use of ropes and steep climbing, adding an extra level of excitement to your journey.
The expedition requires approximately 5 to 6 hours of hiking each day, but the effort is well worth it as you stand atop the highest point in Borneo, with breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset. The three peaks, Iwu Oyayubi, Alexandra, and Victoria, are waiting to be explored and conquered by those brave enough to take on the challenge. So, are you ready to push yourself to the limit and experience the thrill of a lifetime? Join us on this expedition and find out!
6:30 AM, meet and pick up from Kota Kinabalu City hotel, journey up the hilly Crocker Range en route to Kinabalu Park. Upon arrival, our team will assist with your hike registration, where you will be given an ID tag (do not lose the tag), a packed lunch, and introduced to your mountain guide. Your climb will start from Timpohon Gate, where you will receive a safety briefing from your guide. The first day’s hike is 6 km, taking about 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness level, to reach Laban Rata Rest House. Along the trail, there are seven shelters with toilets for the convenience of climbers. Tap water is available at every shelter; locals (mountain guides and porters) drink straight from the tap, but we recommend using water purification tablets if you choose to refill your water bottle.
Mount Kinabalu is home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. Take a break for lunch and enjoy the fascinating montane forest, featuring pitcher plants and wild orchids growing along the trail.
Upon arrival at the mountain hut, check into your designated bed and settle in. At the restaurant, you will have access to filtered drinking water to refill your bottle. Dinner is served between 4:30 – 6:30 PM, and lights out is at 8:00 PM.
