Pulau Tiga or literally means Tiga Island is also called the “Survivor island”. Thanks to the American TV series the “Survivor”, where this island was the the first to be its location filmed decades ago. Over time, hence the name Survivor island.
The islands were formed 21 September 1897 by an earthquake on Mindanao caused a volcanic eruption near Borneo. Geographically located 140km south to Kota Kinabalu city it can be reach approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes drive to Kuala Penyu town. From there to continue by another 30 minutes boat ride.
The island is part of a National Park gazetted in 1978. The other two islands were Kalampunian Besar and Kalampunian Damit. Together they were Tiga National Park. At the moment it is manage by the Sabah Parks. The only accommodation available are the Pulau Tiga Resort and the Sabah Park base camp.
The main buzz and attraction at the island is none other than the mud volcano apart from snorkeling and swimming. And not forgetting the white sandy beach!
07:30am – Meet & greet at your hotel lobby. Embark for a 1 hour and 45min drive down south to Kuala Penyu town.
09:30am – Arrive at Kuala Penyu jetty. Put on your sunscreen and get ready for a relatively 25 minutes boat ride.
10:00am – Depart for Pulau Tiga
10:45am – Visit the Snake Island and enjoy your snorkeling session
12:00pm – Lunch at the island
02:00pm – Trek along the trail leading to the mud volcano. Don’t missed to dip in the mud as it is claimed to have a therapeutic essence.
03:30pm – Departs back to the Kuala Penyu jetty & proceed to your hotel
